Yellow diamonds are sometimes called fancy yellow or canary diamonds. They get their yellow color because of something called nitrogen when they’re formed. The way they’re yellow can be different, and experts at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) have a scale to check how yellow they are. The scale goes from “Fancy Light Yellow” to “Fancy Vivid Yellow,” with the last one being the strongest and most valuable.
Here are the different yellows on the GIA scale:
Fancy Light Yellow: Kind of pale yellow, not super strong or bright. Costs less.
Fancy Yellow: More yellow than the light ones. Looks good for engagement rings.
Fancy Intense Yellow: Even stronger yellow. Looks rich and gets attention.
Fancy Vivid Yellow: The best and rarest. Super strong, vibrant color. Costs a lot.
Fancy Deep Yellow: Even stronger, kind of deep or dark. Some people like them, even if they’re not as popular.

People started to really notice yellow diamonds during the Renaissance and Baroque Eras, many years ago. Even kings and queens wore them in fancy jewelry. But, there weren’t so many yellow diamonds, so they stayed pretty rare compared to clear ones.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, yellow diamonds became even more important. Important royal people in Europe, like Louis XVI and Empress Eugénie of France, had stunning yellow diamond jewelry. One of the most special yellow diamonds from this time is called the Tiffany Diamond. It’s a big, cushion-cut yellow diamond that Charles Tiffany bought in 1878. This diamond is very famous and precious.
In the late 1800s, they found a lot of diamonds in South Africa. This made more colored diamonds, including yellow ones.
